04 April 2009

After a mind- and bum- numbing twelve hours in transit - the highlight being, meeting the Snean family below and watching an old man shave himself while in the boarding lounge - I am sitting in my Hong Kong hotel at 5:30 am in the morning. Jet lag, much? Damn these disrupted circadian rhythms.

As the plane spat me out at the airport in Hong Kong, I instantly had to start navigating the subway and train systems with its persistent signs, electronic ticket machines, and circutuous winding paths. The flood of people and the frenetic pace of life in a big urban city instantly put me on automatic - marching my way through line changes, rolling my suitcase over people's feet and not bothering to look back, rushing for doors as soon as they closed or opened. Hong Kong feels like a bastard mix of Tokyo and Bangkok - at certain times, beloved and familiar to me (Bangkok) and simultaenously alienating and clinically urban (Tokyo).

Disgruntled

Why does this disgruntle me so much? Of course you pick the people who look most like every other trendster walking the street. Because that's how fashion democracy works. NZ bloggers, tell me if I'm being unreasonable?

Jewellery Diva

Distressed Shopper: Why do I buy this crap? They change colour after two days.

Yes this is true. I bought some "gold" rings full price from Diva a couple of months ago and was dismayed to find that they left a greenish circle around my finger. BUT - a Diva sale store has opened up in the CBD next to the Ma Higgins Cookie stand. This is a terrible terrible combination for me. There is nothing under $5 at the Diva sale store. I have been there a total of 4 times since yesterday lunchtime when I first stumbled onto it. And the temptation to pair a tonne of new jewellery and headbands with a cookie for $1.20 is just too too much to bear... Wellingtonians - this Diva will remain a sale store until January. Help... The gluttonous stash is below.

This is yet another skirt turned dress. I love the abstract floral print in the very strong 80s colours. Though it pinches a bit on the *ahem* decolletage it's not enough to discourage me from flitting to the dairy for a pack of corn chips in it.

I'm watching Ghost Town tonight - thanks, Natelle for the review! - and, given the huge time I had last weekend, I am looking forward to kicking back at the movies and having a sedate, civilised Saturday. I hope though that at least one you has as good a time tonight as this girl from Cobrasnake.

NOTE NOTE NOTE: There have been a few new commenters on my blog and I am so pleased and excited that you all found me! I will be linking to every single one of you because I've had a nosey through your blogs, left a comment or two and loved every single one of them. I plan to do this very very soon!

I Want To Be Your Friend

It's true - clothing is an expression of your self. It is a signal to the world. A prompt to which others react. And if I saw these women walking down the street, I would:

Ask - How have you remained so timeless?
And - Girl, I love you because you work a floral dropcrotch like it ain't no thang.

Ask - Can I be your friend? And by the way I see those shoes.
And - Let's go shopping! But what's in that big bag of yours?
Perhaps - Tell me the secret to your elegance. Oh the lace, lace!

I wonder what a stranger would say to me?

dear susie

i don't usually steal other fashion blogger's posts but i had to just this one time...don't go changing. to try and please. i love you just the way you are.

"I KNOW that if I rolled up my Lanvin blazer sleeves, donned some cut-off denim shorts, black opaques, my Balenciaga-knock off boots and an AA tee, people would remark that I looked half-decent and vaguely dare I say chic? I've come to realise that the cliches about fashion conformity don't exist for no good reason. Originality is encouraged but god forbid if you don't worship at Christopher Decarnin's feet, think Carine Roitfeld is elegant amd that the Olsen twins are effing cool and want Alexander Wang to be your gay best friend, then you can just F right off and hide in a fashion cave, banished forever into the realms of un-cool and downright dorky...The choice in fashion is what has always endeared me to it and I will be damned if I'm to be limited to a palette/selection just for the sake of adhering to those fashion truths." Susie Bubble.

you are indomitable, Susie. you taught me everything I know about fashion blogging. even if you have no damn idea. i have a mad mad girl crush on you. read the rest of Susie's inspiring, amazing post here.

Scenes of Summer

I guess you could call these "street style" photos? Or a very wide translation of the term. Perhaps it's more like "street stalker" given the sneaky way these photos were taken in Wellington.

I love the second photo from the top. Taken on Abel Smith Street at a garage sale. I think it was his fanny pack/money belt. And how cool is the old man in his bomber jacket wheeling a bike? And that's a laundry basket on the front of his bike!

She looked super cute and cool in her white shorts and floral top. I dream of having hair like hers.
