your greatest inheritance

Last year, I went back to my home country after seventeen years away. Staying at my grandmother's house, I realised that a lot of my obsessions (flowers, gardens, knick-knacks, clothes, photos) were not mine alone. The way my grandmother arranged a collection of glossy seashells on a glass table. The effortless way my mother wrapped a scarf around her neck. My aunt's laugh and my cousin's poses. I saw myself in these gestures. Perhaps it may be a bit early to be thinking of Christmas. But there's always a time to think about family and home. Tonight, I think of where I've come from. And how as an immigrant, I am simultaneously so far away from home, and yet, right where I belong.

  1. I love your dress and your watch, so pretty. And I also love the purple flowers ;)
It must have been so nice to go back home after so long. My parents were both born overseas but have never been home, hopefully they will one day.

  2. So pretty! That dress and the way you've done your hair is so charming! My Mum was from OS but I never got to meet her family - I've always been very curious and a little shy about the "other" family - am I like them at all? A big mystery!

  4. You look so lovely! I love your hairdo and that beautiful pink dress!

I think I've come to think of my family more often after I started to live away from them. We still live in the same country, but I sometimes feel like they're far away.

I complete relate to that sentence: "And how as an immigrant, I am simultaneously so far away from home, and yet, right where I belong."

  7. What a sweet, sweet dress, Ana! And I love your hair- just gorgeousness all around!
I'm feeling the same pull towards family and traditions as the holidays near. We aren't quite as far from our family (a few states south), but we don't celebrate the holidays anymore and that is very bittersweet.
Hope you are having a wonderful weekend!
    xoxo,

  9. you're at the botanical gardens! lovely. Also, isnt it wonderful when you find out that you have inherited all your lovely quirks from grandparents. I went back to my grandmothers house when I first moved home from England and I saw her house in a whole new way - it was exactly where I wanted to be and live. She collected the same sort of things i loved and had a beautful garden. just how i want to live x

  11. Lar meant that we don't celebrate the holidays with our extended family anymore. We still celebrate, but it's just not the same when you're not surrounded by so many people who are like you.

You look heavenly in that dress!

  12. That's such a beautifully divine dress Ana!! I love your poses and your amazing attitude! I'm an immigrant in U.S. as well and there's been a lot of challenges but I'm trying my best to survive as best as I can. I can really relate to how you feel! xoxxoxoo

  13. These are beautiful photos. That dress is gorgeous. Love what you wrote too. Even though I'm an Australian citizen, I was born overseas, lived overseas for a fair bit of my childhood, and my mum is from OS, so the concept of 'home' has always been an interesting concept to me.

  15. what a beautiful setting! and i love the pictures!

my grandma passed away a few years ago. it was so hard seeing all of her fabulous stuff be divvied up, sold and given away. she had textiles GALORE (she quilted), and she collected so many unique and interesting things (including 27 complete sets of dishes - LOL!). i think either she influenced me more than i ever realized, and i treasure everything i have from her.
