Some say blogs are just another medium to project an unrealistic lifestyle, inflate expectations, and encourage wasteful consumerism. These people insult your intelligence as a reader. They presume that because magazines and blogs portray only certain things (perfectly arranged table-settings, amazingly lit photoshoots, blemish free faces, painstakingly styled outfits) you are dumb enough to believe that that is what is expected of you in real life. They're telling you that you're stuck in a labyrinth bigger than you could ever know. You have no agency or control. You'll never get to the middle, nor will you ever slay that mythical Minotaur. You'll always end up feeling fat, unattractive, and six seasons behind what was cool.
I've been reading magazines ever since I was twelve. I've been visiting your blogs for the past four years. I don't see what they see. And I don't feel what they expect me to feel. When I read your post or flip that glossy page, I've escaped, I've been inspired, I've been often underwhelmed but sometimes awed beyond belief, and I've been grateful for that pocket of beauty which sometimes feels like a big sigh of relief after an indifferent day.

i think criticism of the blog design world comes from a place of deep insecurity. there are times that i would like to see more honesty, but mostly i feel inspired and understand that the blog persona we all have is a projection of ourselves (a well edited projection).
ReplyDeleteHear, hear.
