This city is filled with black clothing; black suits, black shoes, black dresses. It is a city of public servants, young accountants, slick commercial lawyers and busy cafes with acres of polished floors. However its surface is liberal, fresh, laidback and young; prostitution is decriminalised, the most popular lunch time buffet is run by Hare Krishnas, and there are a surfeit of communes on the outskirts of town. But at its core is conservatism, money, and rules. No urban city can be built without those three things. On certain days, I pride myself in my ability to blend in - walk their walk, talk their talk, attend their meetings and use the latest lingo like "talking points" and "risk". Was it Winston Churchill who said "If you aren't liberal when you're young, you don't have a heart. If you aren't conservative when you are old, you don't have a brain"? They talk about it like it is inevitable. As if, with age, there is more to lose and more to protect. As if, with youth, there is only recklessness and rage.
