Watch Me Shop.

Carol Sarler thinks I'm an airhead because I like to think about shopping and because I like to actually shop. She also thinks I am the death of feminism everywhere. Oh and she thinks advertising has nothing to do with it. And I have nobody but myself to blame. But the amazing Abbey O'Reilly at thefword.org has may back

"...For some reason it’s now become fashionable for female writers to make sweeping and offensive generalisations about women, as if in doing so they are truly pushing towards equality, by critiquing their own kind. She says women should be prepared to take the “blame” for the perpetuation of redundant stereotypes, and that when asked again about the shopping habits they should “just lie.” But firstly, is the claim that men think us airheads considered a threat to make us change our wily ways? And why is it something eliciting a sense of accountability? A woman shops. She does it because she likes it. She does it because she has her own money. And she will continue to do it."

Just watch me, Carol. W-A-T-C-H-M-E.

  1. I love those shiny wedges!
Ugh! I am a feminist and I do enjoy shopping. Also, why does no one call an interest in sports frivolous? Or for that matter being a bookworm? Because really you're not benefitting anyone else when you watch a soccer game or read a book. There's bigger decisions we make which show us as frivolous human beings or not, than whether or not we like comfy and cute shoes!

  2. Well - some have said that basically anything associated with the feminine, such as shopping, is automatically undervalued, as opposed to things associated with the masculine, such as sports, which is held to be of importance. I know I love to shop and I know this doesn't make me an airhead. However, shopping with money you don't really have may make me a little silly ;)

  3. You actually ventured out in that weather yesterday? See, there are plenty of men who like to shop these days, but as far as woman liking to look beautiful (which I guess relates closely to clothes shopping!) I can't see what feminists problem is when it's very definitely empowering to women!
