tremblement de terre

We had such a big earthquake in Wellington yesterday. Living here, you get used to the ground shuddering underneath your feet but yesterday, it wasn't so much a shudder but a huge jolt. It sounded like thunder cracking, followed by the clatter of things falling off the shelves downstairs. We crouched under a too-small table, clutching hands, eyes wide. When the shaking finished, the first instinct was to take the stairs and run outside where everyone else was gathering, pale and bent over cellphones. My green vase full of pink peonies had dropped to the carpet, seeping water. To calm the nerves, we found refuge at a cafe with linguine, drinks, and rum chocolate cake. After that, the earth was still again.

  9. I think of you every time I hear of an earthquake near Wellington. I've only ever experienced small tremors and can't imagine the panic a large scale quake must induce. I do know about the calming powers of cake, though ;)

    Gorgeous dress. It's very Ana.

  11. How scary, Ana! I've only experienced teeny earthquakes where I've lived and those were bewildering enough. I'm so glad you guys are okay. Your photos are so calming and look so pretty -- I can't imagine anything ever bad happening in Wellington!
Hope you have a wonder (earth-quake free) weekend!
    xoxo,
    Lar

  12. Living in California, I know that earthquakes can be funny ("oh, that's not an earthquake, that's a sneeze") but in reality, you never know when large ones are going to hit. I'm so glad you're okay!! I'd celebrate safety with a donut any day.
