vines and capes

I often forget I live in Middle Earth until an Easter drive along a deserted road with a view so expansive, epic, and heartbreaking that you forget to breathe. There were peppermint seas hung with curtains of clouds, damp vines with drooping yellow leaves, woolly sheep grazing in green paddocks dotted with decrepit wooden outbuildings, and immense, towering slabs of rock the colour of soot. I stumbled, giggling, down a pitch black country road on the way to dinner, a torch my only defence against the gloom. I think you should come visit. You'll like it here. We'll ride bikes with baskets at the front, drink free vino at wine tastings, play hide and seek in  the vines, inspect the diggers for sale at Ngawi, and climb 250 steps to a candy striped lighthouse.

P.S. We're in Martinborough and Cape Palliser

  8. Adore the pinky mauve flowers amongst the yellowy autumn vines - that photo of you amongst them is gorgeous! What spectacular scenery you have over there. It doesn't look anything like Aus. We have spectacular too but it's a very different spectacular!

  16. Oh I'm jealous. The scenery is just so beautiful. The air must be so fresh and crisp too- something that you definitely don't get if you live in a busy suburb like me. Anyway, the breakfast looks amazing. I SO need my own teacup and saucer set. Tea looks so much prettier when it's served like that!

  21. When the magic money fairies drop a giant lump sum in my bank account I'll be taking a grand world tour. You can be sure that New Zealand, er, Middle Earth, will be my first stop :)

I love the fluid movement in the last photo and how the wee little vanishing point opens up into a broader scene of hills and trees.
