dried leaves for louisa

I sometimes think about the person who carefully placed four dried leaves in this book. Maybe they went out into their garden and picked the leaves specially, carefully ironing out the fronds between two thin sheets of cotton, gingerly lifting them by the stems and hanging them out by the windowsill to dry. Perhaps it was a particularly hot summers day. When they ironed out the cotton enveloping the leaves, the steam from the water rose into the air and beads of sweat formed on the tops of their forehead. Was it random, where they inserted the leaves into the book? Or did it mark their favourite parts? The years passed, and those leaves lay there, forgotten, waiting to be rediscovered. If I could find the person who used to own this book, I would give it back to them. It looks like it was treasured and loved, but forgotten. No one likes to be forgotten, unless it is for a very good reason.

  1. You always write so beautifully! I love how a couple of dried leaves in a book can make your imagination fly. It kinda makes me want to leave little things in library books and wonder what the next person who borrows the book will think of it.

  5. I love when I find odd things in secondhand stuff...I once found half of an angry letter in the pocket of an old coat, and a homemade bookmark in a very old book. It was made out of faces of boys cut from black and white photos with hearts and flowers cut out from card....

  6. How beautiful is what you wrote. I used to do this dry of leaves in books. And flowers too. It is pretty to keep some of this pieces forever.

  7. oh cool I didn't know louisa wrote a book called good wives. How is it? Is it satirical or something? I borrowed Sideways stories from wayside school, and in the chapter about ms. mush, the overweight cafeteria lady, some kid scribbled a very rude word over her face lol. The funny thing is, the story doesn't even make her sound mean! She's quite nice in it.

  23. My mom bought a series of Raggedy Ann & Andy books at auction not long ago - one of the books had dried four leaf clovers tucked into some of the pages. It was kind of magical :)
