one city of love travelled alone

While waiting for the overnight train from Venice to Paris, I met a Korean exchange student who was on her way to Slovakia. She was 21, living in Paris, and talked wistfully of the boyfriend she had left in Seoul. She told me that in all her time in Paris, she had tried to avoid taking an accidental glance at the Eiffel Tower. She had yet to visit it up close. I asked why. She simply said it was something she wanted to see with somebody she loved.

One night later, I wandered through the Place Vendome, stumbling accidentally into a side entrance into the Jardin des Tuileries. The sun was setting purple in the sky. The Eiffel tower glimmered in the distance. A golden carousel glowed amidst the dark branches of the bare trees and the blankets of snow. An enormous ferris wheel glittering icy light revolved in the air. It was one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen in my life. In that moment, I understand that girl and her refusal to see the Eiffel Tower alone. After two weeks of travelling by myself, I felt bereft. There seemed little point in seeing something so breathtaking without being able to share it with somebody else. Others are there to remind you that the sight you see and the things you feel are real. Beautiful things are meant to be shared. Without others, what you saw could almost have been just a dream.

  1. I hope you have a chance to visit it soon with a loved one! I never thought of it this way, but the way you described it is so true!

Beautiful photos, Ana B, and we can't wait to hear and see more about it!

  3. These photos take MY breath away!!! Thank you so much Ana.B!!! I'm so with you about travelling alone though. I went to London with my family when I was young and adored it. I then went back a few years later and lived there for three months - it was still amazing, but because I was alone it wasn't as gorgeous as before. But we are with you sweetie!!! If not actually there we are there in spirit!! :)

  5. It's one beautiful thing after another, are you overwhelmed in any way? I think I would be. And when I came home, I'd take weeks to really take it all the sights and get back to normal life.

A really awesome collage of beautiful memories!

  6. So true. I've been to Paris several times, but the trips I made with my husband were always the best. We actually got engaged on top of the Eiffel Tower! :)

  16. "Beautiful things are meant to be shared. Without others, what you saw could almost have been just a dream." Although it's taken me a few days to comment, I did actually think about this post and your words on my way to work this morning. I was able to glimpse a little tease of sunrise while driving along a quiet country road. The wash of pinky-orange peeking up over the horizon was so beautiful and calming I wished there was someone else there to see it (like my mum or a dear friend). Thank you for sharing these beautiful images of Paris, Ana.

  17. So beautiful! It must be hard especially in Paris travelling solo as it is well known as a city for lovers but I think travelling alone can be such a great experience and you can gain a lot witnessing things and doing whatever you please :)
