more than shelter

Perhaps I'm overly-sentimental, but some of my clothes contain such potent memories. I remember how I felt on the days I wore it, what people said, the way the fabric fluttered around me as I danced. I sometimes look at a dress and a tidal wave of memories wash over me based on everything that happened the one night I wore it. For this reason, I've had some items of clothing since I was 12 or 13. Because, contrary to what others might say, clothes are more than just things which shelter us from the elements - clothes are part of our lives, they're precious and they mean so much.

P.S. I'm wearing Marie's heart locket which features Marie's very own photo. It was love at first sight when I saw it. Visit Marie's etsy shop The Blue Balloon for photos, necklaces, notecards, and gift tags.

P.P.S I'm still listing clothes on Trademe here. Take a look!

  1. Awww. I feel exactly the same way. I'm ridiculously sentimental when it comes to clothing, but even MORE so with jewellery!

This was beautifully written, and I love the collage that you've made :)

  2. cute dress :)
I'm overly sentimental about everything, so I get what you're saying! If I didn't move houses/apartments so much, I bet I'd still have loads of my old clothes still with me.

  4. I'm the same, there are some pieces I cannot bear to part with for senitimental reasons. I guess that's why I find my closet clearing so hard. I've been trying to be ruthless, and remember that I'm letting things take over my life with clutter, and that I can hold onto the memories without the items.

  6. So pretty - and I'm totally with you on the memories attached to clothes - I have things I will never ever in a thousand years wear again but every time I do a clean up I can't quite bring myself to give them to St Vinnies.

  7. That's very true! I'm actually quite hesitant to wear the dress I wore on my last birthday again, because I reminds me so much of it and I don't want new memories with it right now :)

  8. I know exactly what you mean - I have a box full of clothes that I don't wear/don't fit me anymore, but every now and then I get them out and look at them and it makes me happy.

    p.s. did the gloves arrive?

  9. I have a trunk filled with out of focus photos and scraps of paper...newspaper clippings...old letters...cards...ticket stubs...all things that do nothing, but I simply can't throw away, as they all have secret little meanings to me....

  14. clothes certainly do tell a story. i used to have a dress designated only for funerals. i refused to wear it else wear. too much emotion.

  15. I'm the same I keep clothes for sentimental reasons too - I have some godawful things from my childhood that I keep purely because I'm a sap lol

  16. I, too, tend to hang on to clothes (and other bits and bobs) for sentimental reasons. You're right, the memories they carry are potent and oftentimes too difficult to let go.

You look beautiful, Ana. I hope all is well in your little corner of the world! ♥

  18. that's a good way to look at clothes, have memories in them. I remember watching the Confessions of a shopaholic when I was reading the first part of your post. Nice necklace. I should try buying from Etsy instead of just Ebay.

  19. What a sweet dress! I feel the same way about clothing. I can easily detach myself from some things, but if it's something that has a memory to it... must keep it around! :)
