reconciling passion and security

17/10 UPDATE: 6,768 Miles Apart is being hosted by Diana this fortnight. Click here to take a peek at our photo collaboration.

There's a lady who makes $250 an hour walking dogs. She walks about 6-10 dogs per day and hires other ladies as her employees. She loves dogs. She can see her kids off in the morning and be there when they come home. Though she might have to battle through Wellington wind and rain during horrid days and no doubt, there's a lot of dog crap to pick up, she loves it and earns a comfortable living from it. So what's the trick to making money out of something you passionately love? Do you have to sacrifice a few thousand dollars in the bank every fortnight, the extra holiday or two per year? Or can you really have it all? I heard once that if you don't come home everyday with more energy from your work than when you wake up, you're living a life of quiet desperation, and not inspiration. In many ways, this is a rather stupid thing to say. If everyone did this, there would be no one picking up garbage or working in McDonalds. Despite this cynical interpretation, I do believe there is some truth to that statement. But how do you make it happen?

  1. I don't think that's true if you've got something going on in your head outside of work. It's when your head is full of the uninspiring work that you can get into a desperate situation maybe?

we've got GLORIOUS things going on though darl, won't happen to you.

  2. I am in love with that bag. Also, as to your question about the planner, this is where I found it:

  4. Such a pretty, sunshiny collage!

I've been asking the same question for years, how to make money from something I'm passionate about? I do envy people who have it all, sadly I'm not one of them yet!
Hopefully, one day I'll be able to do what I love and get paid for it:)

  5. Lovely dress, lovely shoes.

If you ever find out the solution, please let me know. I can't complain though: I love my job. And Naomi's right: won't happen to you!

  8. That is such a sweet dress!! Lovely outfit. :)

I think as long as you have something to look forward to each day, you can make it through all right -- even if you don't like what you do for a living. For me, there always has to be something to run toward, a future goal that makes the present bearable.

  12. Very interesting post! I too have thought of these things... I talked with a friend of mine who is a medical assistant about how I would die if I had a mindless job where I did the same thing every day. I need new projects, new design problems to solve, a way for my to be creative. But she told me that she would die if she had to be creative every day and solve problems. So, it's all of the different personalities in the world that makes it go round, and to make sure the trash is picked up. :)

  13. Yellow is such a cheery colour. woohoo!

I often ponder the same thing myself. My favourite author, Lois McMaster Bujold said this:

"All great human deeds both consume and transform their doers. Consider an athlete, or a scientist, or an artist, or an independent business creator. In the service of their goals they lay down time and energy and many other choices and pleasures; in return, they become most truly themselves. A false destiny may be spotted by the fact that it consumes without transforming, without giving back the enlarged self. The demands...consume the old self, and replace it with something new, often better and wiser, sometimes wearier or disillusioned, or tense and terrified, certainly more self-knowing, but never the same again."

I guess it's all about balance and trying to sneak in bits of creativity whenever you can. You got to wear the feather headband to work! I don't think I could get away with that. :-)

  14. I miss my job as a public servant, and the patron, but I loved that job as well.
I don't think it's true if you slowly get into what your dream is. It can start off an hour at home, and little by little build your way up.
Very interesting post, and lots of women struggle with this, great question!

Love the dress, btw! I wish the weather looked like yours today.

  15. It is a tricky question...sometimes even doing something that we love...the routine sometimes kill us...it is so hard....

I love your look so much! It is so great to wear a rope as a belt..I need to do that too!

    Many kisses :)

PS - I love yellow so much!

  17. eeek! love your clutch. seriously perfect.
as for living a life of quite desperation well i don't know.
i work to pay my bills. luckily i'm in job where i work and then can come home and do what i really want to do.
so, if my job allows me the means to do things i want to do and find happiness doing them, then i suppose it's not quiet desperation. maybe one day i'll have it all?

  21. Great post! Oh I can't even count the number of hours my boyfriend and I have spent discussing this.

We are both creative types who want to find a way to do what we love for work. Preferably from home.

But for now, that's not going to pay the bills.

I do know that some people really are happy going to work, doing their job well (whatever that maybe) regardless of whether it inspires them, per se. They get satisfaction. Fulfilment. A peace maybe?

But I know that I can't do that myself (I have tried - am trying). And I also know that my boyfriend can't do that (he's tried - now studying). So we will continue to work towards the dream.

  22. I love how you always look so feminine and gorgeous! I think anyone who doesn't dread their job is pretty lucky. I actually love my job, so I think that makes me uber lucky!

  23. all of your yellow gives a much needed burst of sunshine to my rainy windy day.
I think that's something we all struggle with, deciding what to do to balance our passions with our livlihood.

  25. sometimes i also wonder whether i'm in the wrong profession. or at least, working my way towards the wrong profession. i feel like biodiscovery is great, but then get this random urge to go to antarctica and study penguins, or go to the amazon and look at alligator gars... for now i guess i'll settle for goldfish. :)

  26. Either summer or autumn, a dash of yellow is always pleasant. And boy, if anyone willing to pay me that much for walking dogs, I would! But sometimes it takes a lot of natural talent to do what she does, I may like dogs, but do they like me?? Finding what you really like and do it as your daily job is an adventure of its own. And don't say once you have it you'll be happy as a rainbow forever, noooooo...hahaha, there are occasional bumps and stress, otherwise it wouldn't be called jobs.

  27. life is about experiencing and growing and so i think NOT having what you want makes that happen for a lot of people because it motivated them to go forward to higher goal. and while this is going on the mundane tasks that have to get done get done. and we're all evolving in our own times so theres never a shortage of people doing the everyday jobs im sure its not as fulfilling but they learn what they need to and go from there. atleast if they are open to the idea of all of this being a time to learn

  28. Oh gosh, I'm just trying to get my life in order enough so that I don't fall into desperation. I'm far too anxious about where I want to end up and what will come after. Ideally, sacrifice shouldn't be part of the equation, but oftentimes just has to be taken in stride.

The delightful burst of yellow in this post has brightened up my day. It's another raw and bleak one here today. Brr. I'm happy you have ample sun and spring to enjoy! ♥ That dress is adorable. Yellow is such a gorgeous color on you.

  29. I love these pictures!!! yellow! I will need burst of colors for my next week... which is literally, all rain. doncha wish u lived in NY too.

  30. I'm trying to figure out the same thing. I do okay with my online shop, but the bulk of my income comes from teaching. And not that I don't like teaching, but I don't love it the way I love vintage and fashion.

Probably it takes hard work, but I suspect there's also a bit of lucking into the right thing at the right time.

    Happy Friday!!

  33. Great question... maybe the best way to console yourself when you don't get to work at what you love is to do what you love in your free time?♥

Also, such a gorgeous dress, flowers and clutch dear Ana!!

  35. What a cute dress! I hope I can find a great job. It just seems like life is wasted if you spend all your time at a dead end job and only really live in your free time (if even then).

  36. Yellow dress is very charming Ana B! Another sweet sweeet photo shoot! Hmmmm....you've certainly raised a few questions there my friend - I think just plugging away at it hopefully would mean that one day your passion becomes your bread and butter? (fingers crossed!)

  37. Erm... I hate my job. I try and remind myself that it's not as bad as my last one. I just have no passion for it, no real interest in it. But it pays the bills.
That yellow dress is beautiful. You are going into summer now, and I'm so, so jealous.

  38. excellent question. i happen to agree with your cynicism! i have not figured out how to love my work. i think the first step is probably defining the goal. i haven't even knocked THAT answer out. i am better at defining what i don't want than what i DO want. argh.
