I often wonder at the more outlandish make-up tips. While columns bleat about the "sexiness" of the "smoky-eyed/rock chick" look, I wonder why someone would want to look as if they'd gotten into a fist fight and lost. And according to this how-to video, the key to perfect blusher is a combination of highlighter + bronzer + blusher + countour powder. Forgive me, but I had thought the road to the perfect blusher was Just. Blusher. Hadley Freeman in her amazing book The Meaning of Sunglasses, writes "...perhaps we need to reconsider some of our concepts of beauty because there is some make-up that makes neither hide nor hair of sense. Coloured eyelids, anyone? Just who decided that neon-coloured eyelids were the surest way to a man's heart, or just a fast track to a party look in general?"
I do enjoy makeup. I have a vast collection of very similarly coloured apricot lipglosses. I have spent many lunch hours at the Stila counter. But you have to draw the line somewhere. And I draw it at the point where I think people are just making stuff up and labelling them as "essential". The April issue of French Elle where a swathe of gorgeous women appear on the cover and inside sans makeup is a step in the right direction. And I follow suit with my post for today - no make-up. Just moisturiser, a clever photographer, and some good ol' natural light.

Oh your top! Like the color, so bright. I think your day is so happy, and you are so pretty on it. More post pls.=D
ReplyDeleteTotally agree - gorgeous pics as usual, roller girl top!
ReplyDeleteyou look amazing, not sure I'd get away with the old nomakeup look xx
ReplyDeleteYou looke wonderful with and without make- up!
ReplyDeleteUr blazer is really really cool Anna B. :)
ReplyDeleteHope U had a lovely weekend. :)
X♥X♥
you're a natural beauty, hun :) Your hair looks really nice, btw.
ReplyDeleteI admit I'm not much of a make-up girl. Give me a good moisturiser and natural light any time!
This outfit is very very cute, I love those colors :)
ReplyDeleteI rarely wear make-up. I have this weird belief that make-up is equivalent to breakouts/wrinkles. I only use lip gloss because I always have dry lips and moisturizer. You look so pretty sans make-up, au naturel is the best, I think. :)
ReplyDeleteYou're such a natural beauty! I like wearing makeup but only when I really need to impress someone or when I'm with my bf (I want to look pretty for him!) I love your jacket and your necklace! xxoxoxo
ReplyDeleteEveryone said it before me "You're a natural beauty!" - it's the truth anyway! I need a little foundation and powder to feel nice and a bit of lippy but it's no great drama if it all wears off my the end of the day! Gorgoeus cute outfit!
ReplyDeleteyou look amazing! I did a no make up post a wee while ago and since then i've cut back on what i wear as standard. i used to put kohl on every day, but now just mascara. much better for summer!
ReplyDeleteoh! yeah! tell me bout it. i Am jealous of girls who knows make up, apply them, and work them. hihihii. I love make up too. But makes me sad that my eyes gets red easily. Ive tried those hypoallergenic, comedogenics but none seems to work. But am not giving up though, it's one of my dreams that needs to come true. hihihi.
ReplyDeleteoh i love photo shooting at 4pm or early morning. The best natural light ever. the effect is Instant photoshop too. hihihii.
i love the salmon top. It's my fave.
*beautiful* pictures
ReplyDeletei saw those tumblr pics you posted from elle. pretty cool pretty cool. the cynical side of me wonders if it's realy real, like oh maybe they don't consider foundation or special lighting or lol photoshop to be makeup but whatever it's the idea that's important!
ReplyDeletei think diff shades of neon eye shadow looks really cool on performers. Thinking of haley from paramore or patrick wolf. When they do it, it seems more fun and playful rather than, OMG I NEED THIS TO LOOK ATTRACTIVE AND HOT. now that's something i would want to try except that would mean spending a bunch of $$$ on diff. shades of eye shadow that i'll only use like once. lol.
i tried on this powder thing once at Farmers and my skin started itching really bad!! *die* i'll just stick to my lip gloss, thanks.
ReplyDeleteyou look fab!!!
ReplyDeletex
I love your green necklace its so stunning xx

You look gorgeous without makeup! I've been trying to wear less lately, and learning that no one can tell the difference. I think we just get brainwashed into thinking certain steps are necessary. Natural beauty is so much better - and smoky eyes do look scary to me. :)
ReplyDeleteI REALLY LIKE YOUR COLLAGES/POSTS! =)
ReplyDeleteVERY CUTE BEAUTIFUL GIRL!

I want your necklace :)
ReplyDeleteI like your pictures. Nice outfit. I don't think I could pull off the smokey eye look, or neon eye shadow. I haven't been that big on make-up lately.
ReplyDeletePS: Thank you for that tip on sleeping in late. I didn't know that.
I couldn't agree with you more! I do wear make up from time to time but I try to not over do it. So many women cover their true beauty with loads of make up.bleh.
ReplyDeleteyou are one lady who wears bright happy colours so well, i'm so envious of that!
ReplyDeletewhat a cute top :)
ReplyDeleteSometimes i look at teenage girls and see them wearing all the make up that they wear and think to myself 'am i the one who's wrong by not wearing any make up at all?'. Not saying that no make up is the way to go, but too much make up isn't either. I agree that we should go back to what's basic for us and just use whatever is essentially necessary.
ReplyDeletehell ya, no makeup and absolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDeletelove the colors of your outfit too. confidence goes a long way to taking off the layers of color and gunk. (although i do love a good smokey eye every now and again!)
ok, you are SO FUNNY!! BLEAT?!?!? BLEAT!! hahahaha!!! that is going to be my new favorite word for quite some time!!!
ReplyDeleteand you are so beautiful! and you look gorgeous in that amazing top!!!
What lovely, glowing skin you have -- perfect without a bit of makeup! I agree with you about crazy makeup trends: I like trying new things now and again, but for the most part, I would just feel ridiculous if I went around with neon shadow or twenty layers of countour powder. My rule is you always look best when you don't try too hard!
ReplyDeleteYou look amazing without makeup - I'm envious! :)
ReplyDeleteI used to wear a ton of makeup, particularly coloured eyeshadow. Now I wear the bare minimum (for me) - powder, blusher, black eyeliner, mascara, red lippy and that's it. I think it has made me feel more free - before, I was hiding behind all the gunk on my face because I didn't like the way I looked.
I've got to admit I LOVE MAKEUP (colored eyelids and everything hehehehe)
ReplyDeleteYou have a great blog. This is mine if you want to take a look sometime,

Natural beauty! Lucky girl gorgeous Ana... me, not so lucky. I need blush and gloss... and even a bit of eyebrow fix to keep them neat :) But I definitely admire girls who don't need any of it and (since I'm really bad at eyeshadow and anything more complicated than my usual stapes) I even admire those who know how to do the bright neon eyeshadow thing.
ReplyDeleteVery refreshing post, full of truth. You look adorable.
ReplyDeleteYour outfit is so pretty and I adore the necklace.
ReplyDeleteI have to say I like adventurous make-up; it doesn't always make you look your best but it can be a lot of fun...
Lovely photos, Ana. You look radiant. I enjoy a little makeup every once and a while, but most days its just moisturizer and mascara for me. And that's if I remember! ;)
ReplyDeletei think that coral is my favorite color on you! your hair looks like it has a windblower in the photo! glamour!
ReplyDeleteHi Ana, sorry for the very late reply! I wish it were because of dial up, but no, it takes ages even with broadband! :(
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with everyone else here - you look absolutely beautiful w/o makeup! I wear very little myself - just mascara + gloss most of the time ;)
naw, you look beautiful! i'm such a dork with makeup...i actually don't wear any at the risk of me looking like a tranny. haha.
ReplyDeletevery cute. :)
xo.
That watermelon-y color, fit ya perfectly!!! I love the necklase and the flats..!!
ReplyDeletelove how u mixed ur colors, esp. the pop ur necklace brings.
ReplyDeleteI love your color palette today, coral is my new pink. I love and try to be-friend make up, as I wasn't born with Jessica Biel's face structure. But I'm not too fond of wearing them everyday, I'd love to look cool in smoky eye makeup too, but I realize now that some make up trend are not meant for me. (or I look like a dorky raccoon mascot)
ReplyDeleteyour little photo collages are always so perfect x
ReplyDeleteLOVE the necklace!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's so funny you mention this now because I've been heading in this direction too! I've never worn tons of makeup- but I'm trying to lighten up what I wear daily. I'm really excited about less make-up and photoshopping in general in magazines. I get tired of the same smoky eye that you see on every man, woman and child (practically).
ReplyDeleteYou look lovely sans makeup- and I love those colors on you!
I am definately envious of your beautiful skin; I'd be brave enough to skip the make-up too! Love that coral ruffled top, it's a gorgeous colour on you. It's amazing what you can get from Farmers these days eh?!

Sweet look, I love your pink top!
ReplyDeleteAn award is waiting for you on my blog :)
ReplyDeleteSans make up looks so nice, very fresh and normal!

I love your outfits and your little collages. What brand is your nail polish. It's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI love the color of your top and the detail is awesome! The green is a really good accent to it.
ReplyDeleteFinally some shops I have heard of, like Flassons, Farmers and Witchery!
ReplyDeleteI know I'm a little late with this comment but I just love LOVE your necklace!! You look fab, darling :-)
