Going Berserk at Savemart

Oh the joy when I wake up and realise that today is the day that I get to walk the concrete floors of Savemart Waitangirua. This is one of the biggest second-hand stores in the Wellington region. Its about thirty to forty-five minutes out of the CBD and smack bang in the absolute middle of nowhere. But the trip is well worth it.

I'm not such a big fan of central city vintage boutiques or second-hand stores. They're absolutely picked over, the prices are sky high, and to be honest - where is the fun in going to a store where all the clothes have been handpicked by someone else and charges twice the price? For me, the joy in thrifting and vintage finds is the battle - the rummage through piles of rubbish to unearth a long-lost treasure.

Let's also not mention the groups of party-goers who storm through these CBD stores looking for costumes, picking up items of clothing, snorting derisively and declaring its heinousness when I actually would wear that item in my general every day life. That always puts a bee in my bonnet. But I sound like a ratchetty old bag. Forgive me. I'm usually more charming.

My heart broke when I realised I couldn't fit in to this Thornton Hall party dress. The texture was to die for. And it gave me a waist!!! This dress almost made me want to actively lose weight. Almost.

I had to leave the items below behind. Or in the case of the pink frou-frou flying nun dress, I was ordered by the Patient Photographer to put.it.back. This is such a rare occasion that I instantly did what I was told.

Sneak peeks of the gems I came home with! Until next time Savemart.

  1. Savemart sometimes makes me want to cry. My favorite place is a $2 op shop - here you really have to dig, because most of it is crap that is all lumped in together, but I find the best things there. Something funny, I just got a dress that looks nearly exactly like the pink frou frou one but in peach lol....

  2. Argh! I drove all the way out there by myself last weekend, it was freezing cold and I spent a good hour at least wandering around and found NOTHING, save a pair of tights (which were fabulous)... why do I have no luck with op shops?! Good work, my dear. Good work. Pity about the black dress, it does look quite wonderful...

  3. charlene: i actually loved the dress when i tried it on but the boy was adamant. which, as i said, was a first. and then when i got home and looked at the photo of me in the changing room, i had to concede that he was right :) you should post a pic of yours on your site! I'd love to see it.

louise: i think you can't find anything at SaveMart because you are far too chic for it :) i love savemart because i find all sorts of crazy tackiness which suits me completely! hehehe. but i have to say op shops in general are at times hit and miss. i am still smarting about the black dress.
